As with most great stories, there is always love involved in one form or another. 

The story of Chilliplum Bistro is no different…

Chilliplum Bistro is an innovative fusion concept, which has grown over the years from a passion for growing, cooking and serving great tasting food!

It started off, as most ideas do, with an underlying passion. In this case, a passion for ethical, locally sourced, organic produce.

In 2013 Ursula Haupt achieved a lifelong dream of owning her own restaurant. It was initially a small coffee shop situated in Kloof, inside a business park and did not blossom into the vision she had for it. Partly due to location & partly due to financial restrictions, she was not able to fully realise her dream.

After closing in 2014 it was back to the drawing board for the next 15 months, and on the 8th July 2015, Chilliplum Bistro opened at Richden’s Centre in Hillcrest.  

The owners' passion, dedication and strong will gave birth to, not only KZN’s first purely vegan restaurant, but also to South Africa’s first fine dining, vegan restaurant. Possibly a little ahead of its time in cuisine options, Chilliplum Bistro decided to add select organic, free range and hormone free meats to the menu in November of 2016. 

This has made Chilliplum Bistro into somewhat of a ‘sui generis’!  Where Chef Robert and his team have created the menu, predominantly from plants and incorporating the finest cuts of meat, there is the under lying tone of simplicity and quality of produce.

Chilliplum Bistro was then offered the opportunity after 3.5 years to relocate once again, this time to the Gillitts Shopping Centre, where Quo restaurant once was. Gillitts Centre boasts a beautiful, bustling court yard with trees, birds and even a water feature which trickles in the background, there are also 3 other restaurants to choose from. Chilliplum Bistro opened at it’s present location on 01 November, 2018. This has proven thus far to be the best move, as the centre is well known to the locals. Chilliplum Bistro will soon open for breakfast as well.

Thanks needs to be mentioned to some of our suppliers for the ethos in supplying excellent quality products - from “Long Shadow Farm” who supply our cheeses, “Moores-Pitt” for their free range chicken, “Karoo Kitchen” & “Highbury Meats” for their organic beef. Local fisherman for their daily fresh catch & “Wild Meats” for their game produce.  As well as the fresh supply of fruits and vegetables from ‘Bainesfield” & “Early Moon”, it helps to keep Chilliplum Bistro in a class of its own.
